"We have confirmed 16 dead so far," stated Venezuelan Fire Chief Juan Gonalez at the scene. However, authorities warn the death toll may rise further as emergency crews comb through smoldering wreckage.

As per media reports, the speeding truck smashed into a line of cars that was already in a standstill due to another accident on the highway. Major fire erupted after the truck rammed into the cars leading to 16 death deaths.

Deputy Minister for Risk Management, Carlos Perez Ampueda said the chain reaction crash impacted 17 vehicles total, several of which caught ablaze. Social media images depicting huge fires spread rapidly online Thursday morning.

"We have control of all the vehicles that were on fire, including a bus that was completely burnt," Ampueda stated amidst ongoing rescue efforts. He had initially reported eight fatalities before warnings of significant increases emerged.

This is a developing story, further details are awaited.
