On Friday, Israel said that it will send a delegation to continue talks with Qatari mediators. The Prime Minister's spokesman said that there are still flaws with Hamas regarding the ceasefire and hostage release agreement. Earlier, a spokesman said that it was agreed that Israeli negotiators would go to Doha next week to continue the talks. There are still differences between the two sides.
There has been no ceasefire since the one-week pause in November. During which 80 Israeli hostages were released in exchange for 240 Palestinians imprisoned in Israeli jails. The war-torn Hamas-run Gaza health ministry said 16 people were killed in an attack on a school run by UNRWA, the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, that was sheltering displaced people in Nuseirat in central Gaza.
The Israeli military said its aircraft had targeted militants around the al-Jouni school. The army earlier said it had carried out operations in most parts of the Gaza Strip, including Shuja'iya in the north, Deir al-Balah in central Gaza and Rafah in the south. The Shuja'iya area was the first area the army announced it had liberated from Hamas, but fighting has resumed there. Paramedics said 10 people were killed in an airstrike on a house in the Nuseirat refugee camp on Saturday, while four journalists were also killed in an overnight attack.
The United States, which has mediated talks with Qatar and Egypt, has discussed the possibilities of a deal it says is important for both sides. Osama Hamdan, a senior Hamas official, told AFP that the group's new ideas were conveyed to the US sides by mediators. Pressure mounted domestically for the release of the hostages, with regular protests and rallies in Israel.
Israel-Lebanon war
On the other hand, cross-border firing has occurred almost daily between Israel and Lebanon's Iran-backed Hezbollah movement since the Gaza war began. Attacks have increased since last month. On Saturday morning, sirens sounded in northern Israel and the army said it had shot down a "suspicious air target" and two "enemy aircraft" launched from Lebanon fell in an open field. The army had earlier said it attacked several Hezbollah militant positions in southern Lebanon overnight, all near the border. According to Hezbollah, an Israeli drone attack targeted a vehicle in eastern Lebanon on Saturday, killing a Hezbollah officer. Israel said he was part of the group's air defense unit.
