An earthquake of magnitude 7.2 struck the Alaska Peninsula in the early hours of Sunday, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) confirmed. As a result, a tsunami warning has been issued for the nearby regions by the US Tsunami Warning System.

Although the magnitude of the earthquake, which struck at 6:48 AM UTC, was variedly reported by the USGS as 7.4 and 7.3, it was later scaled down to 7.2. The revised depth of the earthquake was set at 32.6 kilometres. The epicentre was almost 89 km southwest of Sand Point, Alaska.

The earthquake was also reported by the National Center for Seismology, although they reported the strength as 7.0. “Earthquake of Magnitude:7.0, Occurred on 16-07-2023, 12:18:18 IST, Lat: 54.59 & Long: -161.05, Depth: 10 Km ,Location: 801km SW of Homer,Alaska,USA,” the NCS tweeted.

No casualties or extensive property damage has been reported in the incident yet.

Scary visuals of the earthquake have been posted on social media by Alaska residents, where violent tremors can be seen.

Alaska earthquake triggers tsunami warning

The earthquake has led to tsunami warnings being issued by the US Tsunami Warning System. A tsunami warning has been issued for South Alaska and the Alaska Peninsula, from Kennedy Entrance to Unimak Pass.

According to earthquake simulations, the water levels on American coasts can be expected to rise by half a metre in the next three to six hours.
