The White House has issued a stark warning regarding potential significant attacks by Iran or its proxies in the Middle East, which could occur as soon as this week. John Kirby, the national security spokesperson, emphasized that the U.S. is prepared for such scenarios and has already bolstered its regional military presence in anticipation.

Kirby underscored that the U.S. shares Israel's concerns about a possible Iranian-backed offensive, particularly in light of the recent assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran last month. "We share the same concerns and expectations that our Israeli counterparts have with respect to potential timing here. It could be this week," Kirby stated. "We have to be prepared for what could be a significant set of attacks."

Israel on high alert following key assassinations

Tensions have been escalating in the region, with Israel on high alert after a series of targeted strikes. The Israeli military recently conducted an airstrike in Beirut, killing senior Hezbollah commander Fuad Shukr in retaliation for a missile attack that claimed the lives of 12 young people in the Golan Heights. The situation further deteriorated when Haniyeh, a prominent Hamas political leader, was assassinated in Tehran, prompting Iran to vow retaliation against Israel.

Kirby reiterated the U.S.'s commitment to supporting Israel, stating, "We obviously don't want to see Israel have to defend itself against another onslaught like they did in April. But, if that's what comes at them, we will continue to help them defend themselves."

U.S. military deployments amid escalating tensions

In response to the escalating situation, the Pentagon announced on Sunday that Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has ordered the deployment of a guided missile submarine to the Middle East. Additionally, the Abraham Lincoln carrier strike group has been instructed to expedite its journey to the region. However, reports indicate that the strike group is currently in the vicinity of the South China Sea and would require over a week to reach the Middle East.

Oil prices surge amid fears of broader conflict

As tensions rise, oil prices have surged by more than 3% on Monday, marking the fifth consecutive session of gains. The looming threat of a wider conflict in the Middle East has raised concerns about potential disruptions in global crude supplies. Meanwhile, Israeli forces continue their operations near Khan Younis in southern Gaza, even as international efforts push for a ceasefire to prevent a broader regional conflict involving Iran and its proxies.
