Shoppers at a Mississippi Walmart were shocked last week when a mother brought her toddler son shopping wearing nothing but a diaper, despite sub-zero temperatures. The incident occurred during the state's recent winter storm when temperatures had dipped to 37 degrees Fahrenheit (2.7 degrees Celsius)

Employee steps in but gets fired

According to witness and Walmart employee Felicia Nicole, the underdressed boy was visibly shivering while sitting in the shopping cart. Multiple customers confronted the mother about the lack of clothing, with one shopper eventually draping their coat over the toddler.

Nicole began recording a video of the exchange after attempts to reason with the mother failed. “What’s wrong with you?” a man is heard asking in the footage as the mother continues nonchalantly shopping. Nicole says she was fired soon after posting the video online in an attempt to spur intervention.

Authorities get involved

Amidst the growing altercation, the mother mentions police had been called on her twice previously regarding similar incidents. Other shoppers emphasize the need for another call to authorities.

The video concludes with an elderly customer purchasing warm clothing for the boy as the mother idly scrolls through her phone.

Speaking out after termination

Defending her actions, Nicole explained that she acted solely out of concern for the toddler's well-being in a TikTok Video. She also clarified that the police had been called while also adding that her actions stemmed from her past as she also had a child who died.

“When you see a child that's being neglected, don't have on any clothes, just a diaper, no shoes, no socks, no shirt, no nothing. So why wouldn't we call the police?”

“I took it upon myself to record it for the child’s sake,” she wrote online. Still, she says recording the troubling scene cost her job. “Now I’m jobless because I was only trying to help and save that baby’s life.” Police have reportedly launched an investigation into the situation.
