Uzra Zeya, the Under Secretary for Civilian Security, Democracy, and Human Rights, will travel to India and Bangladesh on July 8-14, the US State Department has confirmed.

According to the State Department’s statement, Uzra Zeya will meet with top government officials in India “to discuss the deepening and enduring U.S.-India partnership, including advancing shared solutions to global challenges, democracy, regional stability, and cooperation on humanitarian relief.”

Indian American Zeya, who was born in the US to Bihari migrants, took to Twitter to confirm the visit and reiterated her goals. “Traveling to India and Bangladesh next week to advance shared solutions to global challenges; contribute to a more free, open, secure & prosperous Indo-Pacific; and bolster humanitarian support for refugees & host communities throughout the region,” she tweeted.

Uzra Zeya was nominated as the US Under Secretary on December 2021 and leads the American government’s efforts to support human rights and free speech. She is also the US Special Coordinator for Tibetan Issues, and regularly meets with exiled Tibetan leaders in the US to support the Tibetan cause for independence.

US Under Secretary visit follows Modi’s US Tour

The scheduled visit by US Under Secretary Uzra Zeya comes a few weeks after Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the US in June and met with President Joe Biden in the White House.

Both leaders signed several deals on commerce, trading, and defence, aimed at improving India-US relations and countering the rising influence of China in the Indo-Pacific.
