On the occasion of US Independence Day, President Joe Biden again stressed to implement strict gun control measures while denouncing a wave of shootings happening in the nation.

US vs Gun violence

In recent years, the United States has been shrouded in dark clouds of gun violence and blood bath. There hasn’t been any city left that is not hit or attacked in mass shooting incidents. Recently, on Monday, around five people were killed and 4 were injured in a shooting in Philadelphia, said the police. Another shooting occurred in Forth Worth, Texas, claiming the lives of three and over eight injured.

According to Gun Violence Archive (GVA), the nation has already seen several mass shooting incidents on Independence Day. Five were injured in Lasing, Michigan and four were wounded in Charlotte, North Carolina on Tuesday afternoon.

What Biden said to eradicate gun violence?

Taking notes from all the recent incidents, President Joe Biden said, “Over the last few days, our nation has once again endured a wave of tragic and senseless shootings in communities across America,” while mentioning the shootings in Philadelphia, Fort Worth, and Lansing, as well as recent instances of gun violence in Baltimore, Wichita, Kansas, and Chicago.

To eradicate the terror of gun violence, the president said, “As our nation celebrates Independence Day, we pray for the day when our communities will be free from gun violence.”

Biden on Highland Park tragedy

In last year’s parade in Highland Park, Illinois on the outskirts of Chicago on July 4, a gunman killed seven and wounded dozens. This year, the suburb planned a remembrance ceremony instead of a parade and traditional festivities.

Referring to the shooting’s anniversary, President Biden said, “In mere moments, this day of patriotic pride became a scene of pain and tragedy.”

GVA’s archive report on gun terror

At least 346 mass shootings in the US have been recorded in 2023 so far, said GVA’s archive. Basically, the GVA defines a mass shooting as a gun-related incident in which four or more people are injured or killed, apart from the shooter.

Over 44,000 people were killed in gun violence in 2022, with about 24,000 of them by suicide.

“Much more must be done… to address the epidemic of gun violence that is tearing our communities apart,” President Joe Biden said, praising gun control measures passed in Illinois after the Highland Park attack.

“I urge other states to follow Illinois’ lead, and continue to call upon Republican lawmakers in Congress to come to the table on meaningful, commonsense reforms that the American people support,” the President added.
