The US has been very clear on its support for Israel’s right to defend itself amid the ongoing, Israel-Hamas conflict. Taking their support for Israel a notch higher, the Pentagon announced that it plans to send back two Iron Dome missile defence systems that it purchased from Israel back to the country, as per media sources.

US to send back Iron Dome

The statement was made in at a briefing by the Department of Defense on Wednesday where it said that it plans to lease the Iron Dome systems back to Israel, a US official and the congressional aide told reporters. According to media reports, in this type of financial deal, the ownership remains with the buyer.

The US official also added that the transfer back to Israel could come within a few days.

The White House also said on Monday that it expects to fulfill the additional security requests from Israel at the earliest. Moreover, Biden had promised hefty military assistance to Israel apart from redoubling the US military presence in the region.

Iron Dome of Israel

Israel’s famous Iron Dome was developed by state-owned Rafael Advanced Defence Systems along with the backing of the US. It is a sophisticated system of radar detectors and missile launchers that work together to intercept any rockets that come towards Israel.

It was developed in 2006 to counter the rockets hit on Israel by Hezbollah from Lebanon. The dome also helped defend Israel from Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, where Hamas Islamists took control in 2007. The complete dome was first deployed in 2011.
