As the 2024 U.S. presidential election results pour in, both Democratic and MAGA supporters are trading accusations of voter fraud. With Kamala Harris losing to Donald Trump, who garnered unexpected support from diverse demographics, tensions have escalated over a sharp 16 million voter turnout decline compared to 2020.

Harris supporters question vote drop

Kamala Harris's campaign drew substantial crowds and enthusiasm, yet her final tally fell short by 13 million votes compared to Joe Biden’s total in 2020. Provisional results show Trump receiving 72.5 million votes (50.9%) to Harris’s 68 million (47.8%), while Biden received over 81 million votes in 2020. This election saw an overall voter turnout of around 139 million, down from 155 million in the 2020 cycle.

Supporters of Harris are now raising questions about how the Democratic candidate lost so many votes despite evident campaign enthusiasm. Many attribute the lower Democratic turnout to voter apathy, factors such as sexism, or dissatisfaction with Harris’s policies. However, some speculate about foul play, pointing to theories involving foreign interference and even alleging influence from Elon Musk. Harris’s backers also referenced Trump’s campaign comments, where he assured his supporters, “we don’t need the votes...I have so many votes,” prompting further scrutiny.

Trump’s MAGA surge defies expectations

In contrast, Trump’s campaign saw unexpected momentum among his MAGA base and new voter segments. Despite a seemingly chaotic campaign, with only Trump and Musk as prominent figures, Trump succeeded in mobilizing Latino and Black male voters in higher numbers than in 2020. Even as Harris struggled to sustain support among women, Trump overperformed in nearly every state, surpassing both his 2020 and 2016 numbers.

Political analysts note that Trump’s gains were due to his ability to resonate with his core supporters, while Harris’s base turnout flagged despite her campaign’s financial and logistical advantages. Trump’s social media presence also spurred further speculation as he alerted his followers to supposed “disturbances” in Philadelphia before polls closed, though no further incidents were reported that evening.

Battle over missing votes and 2020 allegations

With Harris’s supporters highlighting the “missing” 13 to 16 million votes in 2024, Trump’s followers claim the results confirm their suspicions of 2020 voter fraud. One Trump supporter on social media wrote, “The scariest thing about the 2024 election is that someone created almost 20 million Democrat votes out of thin air in the 2020 election but decided not do it in 2024.”
