External Affairs Minister (EAM) Dr S Jaishankar and US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken met in Washington on Thursday, September 28, to hold bilateral discussions on furthering the ties between India and the US. The discussions revolved around global developments and the two diplomats also laid the groundwork for a 2+2 meeting during their wide-ranging talks 2hile India and Canada are tangled in a diplomatic tussle over the shooting of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in June.
Ahead of the meeting, Jaishankar and Blinken posed for pictures together in front of the media and Jaishnakar said “Good to be back here. And we, of course, had the prime minister here this summer. Thanks to the US for all the support to the G20 Summit”
The US State Secretary also said that he had some really good discussions at the G20 Summit and the sidelines of UNGA in New York. He further added that he was looking forward to his discussions with his Indian counterpart. Both diplomats did not take any questions from the media. The EAM is currently on a five-day official trip to Washington DC.
Jaishankar shared a post on X announcing his meeting with Blinken and wrote “Great to meet my friend US Secretary of State @SecBlinken at State Department today. A wide-ranging discussion, following up on PM @narendramodi’s June visit. Also exchanged notes on global developments. Laid the groundwork of our 2+2 meeting very soon,”

Previously State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller also spoke on the US’s stand on this India-Canada diplomatic standoff and said “I don’t want to preview the conversations he (Antony Blinken) will have in that meeting (with S Jaishankar), but as we’ve made clear, we’ve raised this. We have engaged with our Indian counterparts on this and encouraged them to cooperate with the Canadian investigation, and we continue to encourage them to cooperate.”
While the meeting between the two top diplomats was scheduled much before the Canadian crisis broke out, the US has been urging India to cooperate in the Canadian investigation into the killing of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in British Columbia early this year.
These discussions between the two leaders took place amid the ongoing India-Canada row in which Canadian PM Justin Trudeau alleged the Indian government’s hand in the shooting of a Khalistani extremist, a Canadian citizen.
The two nations have since been in a diplomatic standoff and India has rejected all claims calling it ‘absurd and motivated’. Canada had also expelled a senior Indian diplomat from the country which resulted in a tit-for-tat situation where India also asked a Canadian diplomat to leave the country.
Earlier in the day. Jaishankar also met US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan and discussed the progress in bilateral relations between the two countries and ways to take it forward. He also met US Trade Representative Katherine Tie, after his arrival in Washington from New York on Tuesday. He also met US Trade Representative Katherine Tie.
