The United States had received intelligence from a human source regarding an Iranian plot to assassinate Donald Trump weeks before the attempt on the former US President's life last Saturday, according to national security officials. This prompted heightened security measures for Trump.

Officials, however, clarified that there is no known link between this Iranian plot and the 20-year-old who attempted the assassination. Following hints, the US Secret Service and Trump's campaign were alerted to the Iranian threat, prompting increased security measures, as confirmed by a US national security official.

According to the sources, Trump and his former secretary have been facing threats from Tehran, since the 2020 drone strike in Iraq that killed Qassim Soleimani, leader of Iran's Quds Force.

Iran's mission to the UN calls allegations malicious

The Iranian representation to the United Nations refuted reports that there was a plot to kill Trump by Iranians. According to a report from the official news agency IRNA, the Permanent Mission of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the UN stated, "These accusations are unsubstantiated and malicious."

It is important to note that this has come after the US intelligence officials said that the Biden administration received about the plot in recent weeks, following which the Secret Service increased security of Trump.
