US confirms Nusrat Choudhary, first Muslim woman as a federal judge

After the Senate confirmed Nusrat Choudhury on Thursday, the United States will have its first Muslim female federal judge and first Bangladeshi American.

Choudhury, a civil rights lawyer, was nominated by President Joe Biden in January to the US District Court for Eastern New York. She was narrowly confirmed to the life-tenured seat by a vote of 50-49.

According to the reports, Choudhury has a history of promoting criminal justice reform, immigrants’ rights, and access to reproductive care. She most recently served as the legal director for the American Civil Liberties Union of Illinois. She formerly served as the ACLU’s Racial Justice program’s deputy director.

Top Senate Democrat Chuck Schumer, taking it to Twitter wrote, “CONFIRMED: Nusrat Choudhury to be a US District Judge for the Eastern District of New York! She’s an ACLU Legal Director and I was proud to recommend her to @POTUS. She makes history as the first Bangladeshi American and first Muslim American woman to serve as a federal judge.”

ACLU tweeted, “Congratulations to Nusrat Choudhury, legal director of the ACLU of Illinois, on her confirmation to the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York. Nusrat is a trailblazing civil rights lawyer and her confirmation will be an asset to our nation’s legal system.”   

Additionally, Biden appointed US District Judge Zahid Quraishi, the nation’s first Muslim judge. In 2021, the Senate approved his confirmation to the federal trial court in New Jersey.

In 1998, Choudhury received a Bachelor of Arts from Columbia University. In 2006, he received a Master of Public Administration from the Princeton School of Public and International Affairs and a Juris Doctor from Yale Law School.

Nusrat’s father practised medicine in Chicago. In 2016, she wed visual effects producer Michael Early. Nusrat Jahan Choudhury was nominated by President Joe Biden on January 19, 2022, to be a US district judge at the US District Court for the Eastern District of New York.
