UNGA President Dennis Francis: Dennis Francis, the President of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), embarked on a five-day visit to India, marking a significant diplomatic journey. His first act upon arrival was a solemn tribute to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat, symbolising the global recognition of the Father of the Nation's enduring ideals.
As part of a tradition where global dignitaries pay respects to Mahatma Gandhi, Dennis Francis laid a wreath at Rajghat, commemorating the timeless ideals that Mahatma Gandhi espoused. This gesture holds significance in the context of international acknowledgment of Mahatma Gandhi's contributions to peace, non-violence, and human rights.
Expressing happiness amidst the 'Pran Pratishtha' of Ram Lalla in Ayodhya, Dennis Francis arrived in New Delhi, stating his anticipation for discussions on peace, progress, and prosperity in the country. His visit coincides with an auspicious day, referred to as India's 'Second Diwali.'
The UNGA President's visit is aimed at advancing India-UN ties, with a particular focus on rebuilding trust and reigniting solidarity. Invited by External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, Francis's agenda includes discussions on key multilateral issues, a round table on India's Digital Public Infrastructure advancements, and a public address on multilateralism and its impact.
The UNGA President will extend his visit to Jaipur and Mumbai, where he plans to pay respects at the memorial for the 26/11 terror attack victims. Engagements in Mumbai include visits to the National Stock Exchange and participation in discussions on New Orientation for Reformed Multilateralism.
On the concluding day of his visit, January 26, Dennis Francis will participate as a state guest at the Republic Day Parade in Maharashtra. This marks a unique opportunity to strengthen India's collaboration with the UN, particularly the General Assembly.
Discussions during the visit are expected to revolve around India's call for reforms at the United Nations, focusing on making the Security Council more equitable and representative. The goal is to enhance the representation of developing countries in key UN organs.
