S Jaishankar (ANI)
The UK government has condemned the security breach for Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar while he was in London. The breach happened on Wednesday night outside Chatham House, where a few Khalistani radicals tried to push through the security ring around the minister.
The UK Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office (FCDO) spokesperson condemned the incident, saying, "The UK supports the right to peaceful protest, but intimidation, threats, or disruption of public events is totally unacceptable." The spokesperson went on to say that the Metropolitan Police handled the situation quickly and reaffirmed their dedication to providing security for all diplomatic visitors under international commitments.

The event led the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) of India to call for the UK to abide by its diplomatic obligations. As Jaishankar was leaving Chatham House, demonstrators carrying separatist flags and raising pro-Khalistan slogans tried to obstruct his motorcade. This happened a few minutes after Jaishankar finished bilateral talks with UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy on issues such as trade agreements and global affairs.
Community organization INSIGHT UK called the incident "shameful," highlighting that it came even after Jaishankar had successfully negotiated with Lammy for enhancing bilateral relations. INSIGHT UK said, "This attack underlines a grave security lapse during a high-profile visit." British authorities assured after the incident that such lapses would be seriously considered and steps would be taken to avoid such incidents in the future.
In spite of the incident, Jaishankar's visit centered on taking India-UK relations forward, especially in matters like trade and regional cooperation. Both countries reaffirmed their resolve to deepen their ties while resolving issues of concern to both.
