Amid the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict, the UN Security Council will vote on a Brazilian-drafted resolution on Wednesday. The resolution calls for humanitarian pauses in the conflict between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas and allows the passage of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip.

At the request of the United Arab Emirates and Russia, the UN is also expected to discuss the recent attack on a Gaza hospital by the supposed Israeli air strikes that killed 500 people. The Netanyahu government has denied the accusations that holds Israel responsible for the hospital blast and has blamed the jihadi groups for the incident. Meanwhile, Islamic Jihad denied that any of its rockets were involved in the hospital blast.

Palestine in UN

The Palestinian envoy to the UN has accused the Israeli forces of the “massacre” at the hospital and called for an immediate ceasefire. On the other hand. Israel’s U.N. Ambassador Gilad Erdan issued a statement accusing the Palestinian Islamic Jihad militant group of responsibility.

The Brazilian-drafted resolution was supposed to be voted on Monday but it was postponed by 24 hours to give more time to negotiations. The 15-member council then further pushed the voting as President Joe Biden visits Israel on Wednesday.

It is debatable if Israel’s biggest ally, the United States will allow the passage of the resolution as it has a history of shielding Israel from any Security Council action. The draft text also urges Israel – without naming it- to rescind its order for Gaza civilians to move to the south of the Palestinian enclave.

Russian resolution in UN Security Council

Russia had also proposed a resolution earlier in the UN Security Council calling for r a humanitarian ceasefire while also condemning the violence against civilians and all other acts of terrorism, as per media sources. The Brazilian resolution is considered an upgraded version of the Russian resolution that did not pass on Monday.

The difference between the two resolutions is that the Brazilian draft calls for humanitarian pauses amid conflict while the Russian draft calls for an immediate ceasefire.

Israel has completely blockaded the whole of the Gaza Strip and subjected the region to the most intense bombardment ever. The Israeli government had also vowed to annihilate the Palestinian militant group Hamas after it killed more than 1300 people and seized hostages in an Oct. 7 attack on Israel. Meanwhile, around 3000 Palestinians have been killed so far in the Israeli attacks.
