International News. At least 322 children have been killed and 609 injured in the Palestinian territory in the past 10 days in Israel's attack on Gaza. The UN children's agency said in a statement that these figures include children who were killed or injured in an attack on the surgical department of Al Nasr Hospital in southern Gaza on March 23. UNICEF said that most of these children have been displaced and are taking shelter in temporary tents or damaged homes.
Israel resumed heavy bombardment of Gaza on March 18 and then launched a new ground offensive, ending a nearly two-month ceasefire in the war with Hamas. After nearly 18 months of war, more than 15,000 children have been killed, more than 34,000 injured and nearly one million children have been repeatedly displaced and deprived of basic services, a UNICEF statement said.
UNICEF announced the end of hostilities and the lifting of the ban on humanitarian aid from Israel to Gaza, which had been in place since March 2. It also said that sick or injured children should be evacuated for medical assistance. "There is a growing shortage of food, safe water, shelter and medical care," UNICEF said. Without these essential supplies, malnutrition, diseases and other preventable conditions are likely to increase, leading to a rise in preventable child mortality.
