The United Nations has confirmed that Hafiz Saeed, mastermind of the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, is currently serving a 78-year prison sentence in Pakistan. Saeed was designated a global terrorist by the UN Security Councils 1267 Al-Qaida Sanctions Committee in December 2008.He is in the custody of the Government of Pakistan, serving a 78-year imprisonment sentence since 12 February 2020 as a result of a conviction in seven terror financing cases, the Sanctions Committee stated in an amended entry, according to the Press Trust of India (PTI).In December 2022, India requested Pakistan extradite Saeed, wanted by Indian authorities for numerous terror cases.Additionally, the Security Council Committee made amendments to entries on its ISIL and Al-Qaida Sanctions List of individuals and entities facing asset freezes, travel bans, and arms embargoes.Under these amendments, the Sanctions Committee confirmed the death of Hafiz Abdul Salam Bhuttavi, Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) founding member and Saeeds deputy. Bhuttavi, a UN-designated terrorist, died in a Pakistan prison in May 2022 while serving a sentence for terror financing. He helped train LeT operatives for the 2008 Mumbai attacks and twice acted as the groups leader.
