New Delhi: In a groundbreaking conviction, former PhD student Emad Kaky has been found guilty of conspiring to commit female genital mutilation (FGM) and arranging a forced marriage for a young girl. Kaky, 47, planned for the girl to travel from the UK to Iraq, where she was to be subjected to FGM and an illegal marriage. The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) confirmed that this marks the first conviction for conspiracy to commit FGM in England and Wales.

Janine McKinney, chief crown prosecutor for CPS East Midlands, highlighted the severity of the crime, stating, “Female genital mutilation is a horrific crime to subject anyone to – let alone a child. This case sends a strong message to offenders: no matter where the offence occurs, you will face justice.” Kaky’s scheme was uncovered by a witness who ensured the victim’s safe return to the UK and reported him to the authorities. Evidence presented in Nottingham Crown Court, where Kaky was found guilty, showed that he had booked the trip and had communicated intentions to have the victim undergo FGM and forced marriage.
