Prime Minister Narendra Modi oversaw the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on Saturday for the establishment of an overseas campus of the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi (IIT-D) in Abu Dhabi.

This new development is part of the Indian Government’s ‘IIT Goes Global’ initiative and is part of India’s drive to establish its educational presence beyond its borders.

The IIT Delhi’s Abu Dhabi campus will commence its Master’s degree courses in January 2024, and the Bachelor’s degree courses will begin on September 2025. A diverse range of courses will be available at the new campus, as per the official statement.

The move was lauded by Dharmendra Pradhan, the Union Minister of Education, who wrote on his official Twitter handle, “MoU for establishment of IIT Delhi campus in Abu Dhabi in the presence of Hon. PM Narendra Modi ji unfolds a new chapter in internationalisation of India’s education.

“An exemplar of New India’s innovation and expertise, the IIT Delhi campus in UAE will be an edifice of India-UAE friendship. It will set a brand new template for leveraging the power of knowledge for both mutual prosperity and global good as envisioned in NEP.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also hailed the historic moment, writing, “This marks a significant stride in our educational internationalisation and is testament to India’s innovation prowess. Education is the bond that unites us, it’s the spark that ignites innovation. Together, we will leverage this power for mutual prosperity and global betterment.”

This new campus was initially announced in a joint vision statement by India and the UAE in August 2022. It will be the second overseas IIT campus after Zanzibar, and more countries have expressed interest in setting up campuses.
