Extending his rule to the third decade by defeating opposition leader Kemal Kilicharoglu in a runoff vote on Sunday, the President of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdogan won re-election, extending his increasingly authoritarian rule as the country reels from high inflation and the aftermath of an earthquake that destroyed all the cities.
According to the information, opposing news agencies showed Erdogan winning with 52 percent of the vote to Kemal Kilicdaroglu’s 48 percent after more than 99 percent of ballot boxes had been opened.
Before the results were declared official, according to sources, Erdogan seemed to conduct a victory lap in front of his Istanbul home, addressing the sizable crowd of jubilant supporters waving the Turkish flag while perched atop a campaign bus.
While referring to the two election rounds and expressing gratitude towards the people, Erdogan said, “We completed the second round of the presidential election with the favour of our nation. I would like to express my gratitude to my nation for giving us a day of democracy. The winners of both the May 14 elections and the May 28 elections are all our 85 million citizens.”
He further added that he will continue to fight until there is real democracy in Turkey. Erdogan also said, “This was the most unfair election in history, we did not bow down to the climate of fear. In this election, the will of people to change and authoritarian government became clear despite all the pressures.”
According to the reports, 27,513,587 votes, or 52.14 percent of the total votes cast, went to Erdogan. Kemal Kilicdaroglu, the head of the opposition, received 25,260,109 votes, or 47.86 percent.
Extending his warm wishes, Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan for his re-election. The PM also asserted that the bilateral talks between both countries will continue to grow. Taking it to Twitter, PM Modi wrote, “Congratulations @RTErdogan on re-election as the President of Türkiye! I am confident that our bilateral ties and cooperation on global issues will continue to grow in the coming times.”
