An Air Europa Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner encountered severe turbulence, forcing an emergency landing in Brazil and injuring 30 passengers on Monday. The turbulence was so intense that some passengers were thrown from their seats, including one man who ended up stuck in an overhead compartment. The incident occurred during Flight UX045 from Madrid, Spain, to Montevideo, Uruguay. The plane was diverted to Natal airport in northeastern Brazil after experiencing turbulence, as reported by The New York Post.

Videos shared by passengers showed the aftermath, including a man’s feet protruding from the overhead bin, ceiling panels torn off, a destroyed seat, and dangling oxygen masks. Amidst the chaos, a baby was heard crying while passengers worked together to free the man from the overhead bin.

Air Europa said that the plane landed without further issues and that injured passengers were receiving medical treatment. "The plane landed normally, and the injuries of varying degrees are already being treated," the airline confirmed.

A passenger recounted the experience of his journey and how he was enjoying his flight home from a European tour when the captain warned of turbulence and advised everyone to fasten their seatbelts. Initially, the turbulence felt mild, but it suddenly intensified, making things go out of control and causing passengers to be thrown into the air.

Uruguay's Foreign Ministry reported that the injured were being treated at Monsenhor Walfredo Gurgel Hospital in Natal, with transportation arrangements underway to return them to Montevideo. Air Europa planned to send a new flight from Madrid to pick up passengers who opted not to take a bus back to Uruguay.
