World News: US President-elect Donald Trump set the world off balance yesterday by saying that he would not rule out the use of the military to annex Greenland and Panama Canal linked territories to the old continent. Not a day before had his bolder statement faced France and Germany with condemnations. European leaders let it out loud and clear: they cannot be threatened that way. Trump's statements have brought fears of renewed imperialism and have gone like a tornado across the Atlantic.

France and Germany reject Trump's threats

Over Sovereign Border French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot instruction shot down the impression coming from Trump as "there is no question" of letting any country endanger the EU borders. More military fortifications are needed as Europe was "strong" but needed unity, he said, speaking to France Inter radio. "We have to strengthen ourselves," he added.

Reminding of Border laws

The German government responded too in this sense by its spokesman, Steffen Hebestreit: "Borders shall not be pushed by force." And so it is, in that the German government remained uncompromising as regards its demand for due respect of all states' territorial integrity and sovereignty. EU diplomatic pushback from membership's claims of borders vs. a perceived threat against the nation-state within the border as presented in the US.

Trump's Remarks Stir Debate on US Imperialism

Amidst of anger, the French government's spokesperson, Sophie Primas, warned that the words of Trump might be an omen of imperialism and a disturbing step toward authoritarian rule over sovereign lands. She said that Europe needs to "protect ourselves" and "rearm" in the face of possible changes in the global balance of power. This opinion is part of a growing fear in Europe over the new attitude of America in its foreign policy.

Canada and NATO Allies Question Trump's Intentions

With Trump's statements that include remarks on the border between the United States and Canada, it is unclear how serious such threats are. In the meantime, Denmark's measured response by Germany shows the larger hesitancy across the EU in determining how to manage an administration in Washington that grows ever more belligerent in its position on foreign policy.
