Chaos at NASA (File )
Federal government employees were forced to return to office after US President Donald Trump ended work-from-home. However, on his return, he faced uncomfortable situations. According to reports, many employees had to deal with cockroaches and clutter at the workplace, which affected efficiency. Matt Biggs, the president of the International Federation of Professional and Technical Engineers (IFPTE), commented that it was an environment of "complete chaos" at NASA headquarters. The federation represents 8,000 federal NASA employees. The workers, in the opinion of Biggs and a NASA employee, discovered cockroaches on the floor and bugs emerging from the faucets upon the workers returning last month.
"If you do not have a computer or a desk, you are unable to work. This is impacting the efficiency of individuals," he stated. NASA spokeswoman Sheryl Warner said that about 1,000 employees have been arriving at NASA headquarters every day in the last 30 days. The building was built in 1992 and was under-utilised during the hybrid work, but it was maintained.
Some NASA employees said that due to the noise inside the building, they had to sit in their car and hold meetings on the phone. For this, they are using personal hotspots. At the same time, many employees who live 50 miles away arrive early in the morning to avoid traffic problems and sleep in their vehicles before the log-in time.
However, NASA spokesman Warner dismissed these claims, saying that so far there have been no reports that employees are working from their own vehicles. Regarding the seating arrangement, he said, "We have enough space to accommodate the headquarters staff."
Soon after taking over as the 47th President of the United States, Donald Trump issued several executive orders to establish control over federal employees. Under one of these orders, all employees were directed to work from office five days a week.
The decision was part of Trump's commitment to end the work-from-home culture that grew during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, due to this decision, many government employees are facing a chaotic workplace and inconveniences.
