In a controversial move, Donald Trump announced plans on Tuesday to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the "Gulf of America," citing immigration concerns as the driving factor behind the decision. The incoming U.S. president, set to be inaugurated on January 20, described the name change as "appropriate" and reinforced his stance on imposing strict tariffs on Mexico and Canada.
During a press conference at his Mar-a-Lago estate, Trump addressed reporters about the proposed name change. “We’re going to be changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, which has a beautiful ring to it,” he remarked. "That covers a lot of territory. The Gulf of America—it’s appropriate, appropriate," he reiterated.
Trump took the opportunity to highlight his concerns over immigration, stating, “Mexico’s really in trouble. A lot of trouble. It’s a very dangerous place.” He insisted that Mexico must take action to curb the flow of migrants into the U.S. and warned of "very serious tariffs" on both Mexico and Canada if the issue persists.
This announcement comes as part of Trump’s broader hardline approach to immigration and trade. He has repeatedly claimed that unchecked immigration poses a significant threat to U.S. security. Trump emphasized his readiness to impose severe economic penalties, stating, “The drugs coming through are at record numbers, record numbers.”
Additionally, Trump revisited his suggestion that the U.S. should assert control over strategic territories such as Canada, Greenland, and the Panama Canal. When questioned about potential military or economic measures to achieve this, Trump did not rule out the possibilities, leaving the door open for speculation.
In a sharp critique of past policies, Trump denounced former President Jimmy Carter’s decision to return control of the Panama Canal to Panama, calling it a "disgrace." He claimed the U.S. was "shortchanged" in the deal, asserting that the agreement undermined America’s strategic interests.
