The upcoming meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and U.S. President Donald Trump is set to be a landmark event, potentially shaping the future of strategic, economic, and political relations between the two nations. Over the years, the personal rapport between Modi and Trump has flourished, with their first meeting taking place in Washington in 2017. Since then, several high-level meetings and joint appearances, such as the rallies in Houston and Ahmedabad, have symbolized the growing bond between the leaders. Ahead of this crucial meeting, India has already taken steps, including reducing tariffs on U.S. goods and initiating the process of sending back undocumented Indians from the U.S.

Trump’s demands: What to expect from the meeting

Despite the strong relationship, President Trump may come with a set of tough demands. These could include further reductions in tariffs on U.S. goods, requests for increased oil imports from India, and favorable policies for American businesses operating in India. Trump has previously raised concerns about the U.S.-India trade deficit, and this meeting could see those issues take center stage.

India’s interest in purchasing oil from the U.S. has already been expressed, and it is likely that President Trump will press for even higher oil purchases. However, India’s continued imports of cheaper oil from Russia could complicate discussions on this front. The meeting will likely explore how India can balance its oil imports from both Russia and the U.S., with Trump urging India to increase its purchases from the latter.

Nuclear energy collaboration

The nuclear energy sector also holds potential for deepened cooperation between the two countries. Prime Minister Modi is keen on having the U.S. invest in India’s nuclear energy sector, with India currently working on amending its nuclear liability laws to facilitate such investments. Expanding this collaboration could bring significant benefits to India, especially in terms of energy security and technological advancements.

Technology and H-1B visa discussions

There is also a strong potential for growing cooperation in the technology sector. A major topic of conversation could be the Initiative on Critical and Emerging Technologies (ICET), which seeks to enhance the technological partnership under the watch of national security advisors from both countries. Additionally, Prime Minister Modi may address the importance of maintaining the H-1B visa system, which plays a vital role in facilitating the movement of highly skilled Indian tech workers to the U.S.

India’s role in global geopolitics: Iran and Russia-Ukraine crisis

The evolving geopolitical dynamics, including India’s relations with Iran, will likely be a significant part of the discussions. The Trump administration has taken a tough stance on Iran, and Modi may seek to clarify India’s continued importance of its relationship with Iran. Additionally, the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict and the Gaza crisis may come up, where India could position itself as a mediator, advocating for peace and stability in these volatile regions.

The Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (Quad), which includes India, the U.S., Japan, and Australia, is also expected to be a topic of discussion. Trump has been a staunch supporter of the Quad, and Modi will likely explore ways to enhance regional security and counter China’s growing influence through greater U.S. cooperation. Strengthening the Quad could significantly bolster the strategic partnership between the two countries.
