In a heartbreaking incident, a 33-year-old British base jumper lost his life after a parachute malfunction during a daring leap off a 29-storey apartment block in Pattaya, Thailand. The tragedy unfolded on Saturday when Nathy Odinson, hailing from Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire, attempted the risky jump that ended in a fatal fall.

Odinson, an experienced parachutist, illegally climbed to the top of the 29-floor apartment building in the coastal resort town of Pattaya. His ill-fated attempt at base jumping took a tragic turn when the parachute he was holding failed to deploy, leading to a catastrophic fall through a tree before reaching the ground.

Local security officials revealed that the base jumper had parked his car near the condo, surreptitiously entered the building, and ascended to the rooftop for the fatal stunt. The accident prompted a swift response from the police, who were alerted to the scene at 7:30 pm. Paramedics, upon arrival, pronounced Odinson dead, initiating an immediate investigation into the circumstances surrounding the tragic incident.

A security guard at the scene disclosed that Odinson had previously attempted jumps from the same building, posing a potential risk to pedestrians below. The familiarity of the jumper with the location adds a concerning dimension to the incident.

Lt Kamolporn Nadee, deputy inspector of investigations at Bang Lamung district police station, highlighted that the parachute malfunctioned, deviating from its expected centering. The friend who filmed the ill-fated jump is under questioning, and forensic officers are closely examining the parachute as part of the ongoing investigation.

Despite being an experienced parachutist, Odinson's tragic end has sent shockwaves through the community. Operating under the name "Nathy's Sky Photography" on Instagram and Facebook, he documented his skydiving adventures, showcasing his passion for the extreme sport. He also ran a sky photography company, offering private sky drives to customers.

The British Embassy in Bangkok has been notified, and efforts are underway to contact Odinson's relatives in the United Kingdom. The Foreign Office has expressed its support for the grieving family, stating, "We are supporting the family of a British man who has died in Thailand."

Perils of Base Jumping

Base jumping, an extreme sport involving jumps from high landmarks instead of airplanes, poses inherent risks due to the limited time for jumpers to deploy their parachutes before reaching the ground. This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers associated with such adrenaline-fueled activities.

As investigations unfold, the community mourns the loss of a seasoned skydiver, and authorities evaluate the circumstances leading to this unfortunate event.
