India has unofficially communicated concerns for the safety of their officials in Canada, as pro-Khalistani posters have issued threats to top Indian officials.

Posters for a Khalistani rally scheduled for July 8 are being circulated around the Canadian capital of Ottawa. The posters have issued threats to Sanjay Kumar Verma, India’s High Commissioner in Ottawa, and Apoorva Srivastava, the Indian Consulate General in Toronto.

A senior Indian official confirmed that they have passed on their security concerns to the Canadian foreign ministry, Global Affairs Canada, and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), which is in charge of providing diplomatic security. The local police in Ottawa and Toronto have also been alerted about the threats.

A Khalistan freedom rally is being organised on July 8, which will be held to celebrate the pro-Khalistani leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar. Nijjar, who was the head of the Canada-based Khalistan Tiger Force group, was shot dead on June 18 outside a gurudwara in Surrey.

Khalistani terrorists harming foreign envoys in the name of freedom: Indian High Commissioner

Sanjay Verma, the Indian High Commissioner in Ottawa, said that pro-Khalistani militants were looking to harm foreign diplomats in the name of freedom of expression.

“In the garb of freedom of expression, they are attempting to cause harm to foreign envoys, which may not be the intention of Canadian law and constitution, under which such rights are provided,” Verma said.

An Indian official confirmed that Canadian authorities have considered the Indian security concerns and have promised to secure the diplomatic premises of the country.

The recent rise of pro-Khalistani sentiment in Canada has strained Indo-Candian relations.
