Why Has the Taliban Banned Windows Overlooking Areas Used by Women in Afghanistan? (X/ @NiohBerg)

World News: The Taliban has intensified its oppressive measures against women in Afghanistan, recently enforcing a ban on the construction of windows in residential buildings that overlook areas where women are likely to be visible. This decision, reported by AFP, aims to further isolate women from public view and restrict their presence in society.

Rationale Behind the Window Ban

Government spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid stated that observing women engaged in everyday activities such as cooking, collecting water, or working in courtyards could lead to "obscene acts." This alarming justification reflects the Taliban's ongoing efforts to control women's visibility and autonomy within Afghan society. The decree, shared on the social media platform X, underscores the regime's regressive stance on women's rights.

Monitoring Construction Sites

To enforce this new regulation, municipal authorities have been tasked with monitoring construction sites across the country. They are directed to take action against any residential structures that feature windows allowing clear views of women in their homes. In such cases, authorities will encourage homeowners to erect walls or other barriers to obstruct these views, citing concerns about "nuisances caused to neighbors."

A Shift Towards Gender Apartheid

Since seizing power in August 2021, the Taliban has systematically dismantled progressive policies that previously supported women's rights. The United Nations has condemned these actions as a form of "gender apartheid," highlighting the severe restrictions imposed on women's freedoms. Women are now banned from pursuing post-primary education and are prohibited from holding jobs or visiting parks and public spaces.

Additional Restrictions on Women's Expression

In a further attempt to erase women's presence from public life, the Taliban has enacted laws prohibiting women from singing or reciting poetry in public. Under its strict interpretation of Islamic law, the regime encourages women to "veil" their voices and bodies when outside their homes. Consequently, several local radio and television stations have ceased broadcasting female voices altogether.

The Taliban's recent actions exemplify its commitment to enforcing a draconian interpretation of Islamic law that severely limits women's rights and freedoms. As international condemnation grows, the situation for Afghan women becomes increasingly dire, raising urgent questions about their future under this repressive regime.
