Israel attacks Russian air base: In a significant escalation, Israel has reportedly launched an attack on the Russian Khmeimim Air Base in Syria, marking the first time the facility has been struck. The airstrike targeted warehouses at the base shortly after an Iranian plane allegedly unloaded weapons intended for Hezbollah.

Israeli missiles strike after Iranian delivery

According to reports from Syrian state television, the Israeli airstrike occurred just an hour after an Iranian "Qeshm" Airlines plane landed at Khmeimim Air Base, which is used by Russian forces in Syria. The attack was reportedly concentrated on military sites in Latakia province and a warehouse within the Khmeimim base. However, critical infrastructure such as runways and control towers at both the airbase and Latakia’s civilian airport were not targeted.

The air raid commenced at 3:55 AM and lasted until 4:41 AM, involving the launch of 30 missiles from Israeli naval ships stationed in the Mediterranean. Russian air defense systems attempted to intercept the Israeli missiles but were unsuccessful.

Russian response to the attack

Following the attack, Russian air patrols were seen flying over Latakia, signaling a heightened state of alert. While no damage to primary airbase facilities was reported, the simultaneous strikes on multiple military installations in Latakia have raised concerns about further escalation in the region.

Online reactions to the strike

The Israeli airstrike has drawn strong reactions on social media. Nima Yamini, a commentator on X (formerly Twitter), praised Israeli resilience, stating, "Israelis are a rare breed in 2024, unapologetically tough men who defend themselves not just against enemies but against woke culture that hates them so much."

Another user, War Watch, expressed admiration for Israel’s boldness, writing, "That’s how you deal with Russia. Don’t bow. Don’t coward. Hit them where it hurts. Ukraine and Israel are literally braver than the West combined."

Will Russia respond?

This unprecedented Israeli assault on a Russian military installation signals a new phase of complexity in the Syrian conflict, which already involves multiple international players. With tensions rising between Israel, Russia, and Iran, the possibility of further confrontations could destabilize the region even more.
