Metropolitan Police confirmed the controlled explosion, addressing the "loud bang" reported by locals. Security incident at Gatwick airport

In a separate incident, a large section of the South Terminal at Gatwick Airport was evacuated following the discovery of a suspected prohibited item in luggage. Sussex Police reported, "A security cordon is in place around the South Terminal following the discovery of a suspected prohibited item in luggage. Police were called at 8:20 AM this morning, and an EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) team is being deployed."

Gatwick Airport confirmed the evacuation and urged passengers to avoid the terminal until further notice. "This is causing significant disruption, and some roads around the South Terminal have been closed," said Sussex Police.
