The Sudanese army has announced capturing a strategic market in Omdurman, the twin city of Khartoum, as part of a series of recent victories in its war against the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

Control of capital region at stake

The army said in a statement that its forces had occupied the market in western Omdurman, Souq Libya, after seizing weapons and equipment left behind by the RSF when they withdrew.

Fighting far from over

The conflict seems far from coming to an end as the two belligerent parties still control key pieces of land each despite also being engaged in fierce combat.

Regional patrons fuel conflict

Neither has managed to land a knockout blow on the other, and no sign of political settlement or peace process in the near future is on the horizon, while both have their regional sponsors on their side.

UAE accused of backing RSF

The Sudanese army has accused the United Arab Emirates of backing the RSF, something that UN officials and US lawmakers have found plausible.

Genocide charges pile up

The ICJ said on Friday that it would hear a case filed by Sudan seeking emergency measures against the UAE for violating its obligations under the Genocide Convention.

Humanitarian crisis intensifies

The war in Sudan erupted during power struggle between the RSF and the army in preparation for an intended handover from the military to civilian rule.

Prisoners released during conflict

Al Jazeera Arabic reports that hundreds of released civilian and military captives held by RSF in several detentions in Jebel Awliya, south of Khartoum, were evacuated to Al-Qatana city in the state of White Nile.
