The crowd, many of whom were unaware of the gesture's cultural importance, responded to the act with a mixture of astonishment and enthusiasm. 

A spiritual element was brought to the ceremony by the students' chant of ‘Jai Siya Ram,’ which is a term linked with devotion for Lord Ram.
