San Francisco’s Indian Consulate was subjected to arson during the wee hours of Sunday by a group of Khalistani supporters. However, the fire department of San Francisco quickly doused the fire and no causalities have been reported so far. This is the second major incident executed by the radical group since March to vandalised the Indian Consulate. 

On Tuesday, the video of the incident was shared on social media, which instantly went viral.

US condemns Khalistan’s attack on Indian Consulate 

In a tweet, US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said, “The US strongly condemns the reported vandalism and attempted arson against the Indian consulate in San Francisco on Saturday. Vandalism or violence against diplomatic facilities or foreign diplomats in the US is a criminal offence.” 

Why Khalistani supporters attacked Indian Consulate?

The Khalistani groups have released a video linking the attack with the death of Hardeep Singh Nijjar the way the video was shot by setting up a camera outside the consulate establishes that separatist groups want to send out a message. 

Since Hardeep’s killing, radical groups have been attempting to link the killing to a work of Indian intelligence. That’s not it, there have been numerous protests in Canada and US against India.

Khalistan’s terror in the US 

In March, Khalistani supporters vandalised the consulate as Punjab Police launched a nationwide search operation against the pro-Khalistani preacher Amritpal Singh. Several videos of huge crowds attacking the Indian Embassy went viral on the internet. As per the videos, the Khalistani supporters were protesting and shouting pro-Khalistani slogans and broke through security barriers to install its banners inside the Embassy premises. Also, the videos showed that they tried to break the doors and windows with iron rods. 

India’s stance on Khalistani protest

Some of the protesters even attacked the media personnel present at the protest site. The pro-Khalistani supporters spray-painted a huge graffiti that read ‘Free Amritpal’ on the outer wall of the building. Amid the ruckus, India conveyed its protest in a meeting with the US Charge d’Affaires in the national capital, Delhi. 

Further, in a statement, India said that the US government was reminded of its basic obligation to protect and secure diplomatic facilities. India also asked the US to take proper measures to prevent such events in the future. The statement said, “Our Embassy in Washington DC also conveyed our concerns to the US State Department along similar lines.”
