A powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck central Myanmar on Friday, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported. Germany's GFZ center for geosciences reported that the noon quake was a shallow 10 kilometers, with its epicenter in neighboring Myanmar, temporary reports indicated.
There were no initial reports of casualties or damage.

The metropolitan area around Bangkok has a population of over 17 million, many of whom reside in high-rise apartments. Residents poured out of high-rise condominiums and hotels in tightly packed central Bangkok, staying in the streets, finding shelter from the sun in the minutes following the quake.
