Indians make their mark in Canadian Parliament: 22 out of 65 Indian-origin candidates win

In the federal election held in Canada, the Liberal Party led by Mark Carney has registered a stunning victory. The special thing about this election was that the Indian Canadian community, especially Punjabi-origin candidates.

 International News: In the federal election held in Canada, the Liberal Party led by Mark Carney has registered a stunning victory. The special thing about this election was that the Indian-Canadian community, especially Punjabi-origin candidates, not only contested the election on a large scale but made a record 22 candidates in Parliament. This is the biggest representation ever.

Comparing the previous elections, 18 Punjabi origin MPs reached Parliament in 2021 and 20 in 2019. This time 65 candidates of Indian origin contested the election, out of which 22 victory has given a new dimension to the role of Indians in Canadian politics.

Punjabi wave in Brampton, five out of five seats Punjabi candidates

Brampton once again proved to be a stronghold of the Punjabi community. Punjabi candidates were victorious in all five seats here, although the contest was interesting because Punjabi candidates were face to face with each other in many places.

  • Brampton North: Ruby Sahota of Liberal Party defeated Amandeep Judge of Conservative.
  • Brampton East: Liberal Maninder Sidhu defeated Conservative Bob Dosanjh.
  • Brampton Center: Amandeep Sohi (Liberal) defeated Taran Chahal (Conservative).
  • Brampton South: Conservative Sukhdeep Kang surprised by defeating Liberal Sonia Sidhu.
  • Brampton West: Conservative Amarjeet Gill defeated the current minister Kamal Khera.

Strong presence in Conservative Party, many Indian faces win

Amid the victory of the Liberal Party, leaders of Indian origin also made a tremendous presence at the Conservative Party. Especially many Punjabi faces won from provinces like Alberta and British Columbia:

  • Amanpreet Gill (Calgary Skyview)
  • Arpan Khanna (Oxford)
  • Param Gill (Milton East)
  • Sukhman Gill (Abotsford South-Langley)
  • Jagsharan Singh Mahal (Edmonton Southeast)
  • Harbinder Gill (Windsar West)

NDP defeated, Jagmeet Singh also defeated

The election was disappointing for the New Democratic Party (NDP). Jagmeet Singh, who was a pro -Khalistan image and the face of the party, suffered a defeat from British Columbia's Burnbi Central seat. NDP's vote share has also fallen badly to just 6%, which is a 12% decline compared to last time.

Many veterans lost, many new faces emerged

Many Conservative Punjabi candidates lost in this election. These include:

  • Jaspreet Sandhu
  • Gurmeet Sandhu
  • Rajveer Dhillon
  • Anita kang
  • Gurveer khaira
  • Lawrence Singh
  • Happiness Pandher
  • Jessie Sahota

 

At the same time, Chandra Arya, who has been a three -time MP and considered pro -India, was not given tickets by the Liberal Party this time, which saw resentment among his supporters.

Decisive role of Indian community

This time the election will be known for the decisive role of Indian origin citizens, especially Punjabi voters. He not only influenced the election results, but every major party also preferred candidates of Indian origin. Due to this, his participation in Canadian mainstream politics is being recorded in depth.
