Shahid Latif who was the mastermind behind the Pathankot attack was shot dead by unknown assailants in Pakistan on Wednesday. Latif was one of India’s most wanted terrorists.

The 41-year-old Shahid Latif was a member of the proscribed terrorist organisation Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM). He was the main brain behind the January 2016 attack on Pathankot.

He had coordinated the attack from Sialkot and sent down four JeM terrorists to Pathankot to execute it.

The Indian government had arrested Latif in 1994 on terror charges under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) and was put to trial and eventually jailed. After serving his sentence in India, he was deported to Pakistan via Wagah in 2010.

He was also accused of the 1999 hijacking of an Indian Airlines.

According to the National Investigation Agency (NIA), Latif went back to the Jihadi factory in Pakistan after his release in 2010. The Indian Government had also listed him as a wanted terrorist earlier.

This is a developing story, further details are awaited.
