Russia’s Luna-25 was expected to reach Moon soon, however, it suffered an ‘emergency’ during a manoeuvre by the spacecraft’s probe to its Moon landing, Russian space agency Roscosmos said.

In an official statement, Roscosmos said, “Thrust was released to transfer the probe onto the pre-landing orbit.”

“During the operation, an emergency occurred on board the automatic station, which did not allow the carrying out of the manoeuvre within the specified conditions.” the agency added.

The Luna-25’s lander, Russia’s first such mission in almost 50 years, was successfully placed in the Moon’s orbit after being launched from the Vostochny cosmodrome in the country’s Far East.

Russia’s Luna-25 to land on Monday?

However, the agency did not say if the incident would delay the landing or not on Monday, north of the Boguslawsky crater on the lunar south pole.

In July, Roscosmos chief Yuri Borisov told Russian President Vladimir Putin that such missions were risky, with a success probability of 70 per cent.

Spacecraft might stay for 1 yr on Moon’s surface

According to the experts, the probe is expected to stay on the Moon for a year, to collect samples and analyse soil.

Moreover, advanced cameras installed on the lander have already taken distant shots of the Earth and Moon from space.

Meanwhile, Russia is seeking to restart and rebuild the Soviet Union’s pioneering space programme as the future of its space cooperation with the Western nations looks in doubt amid the Ukraine row.

Taking notes from it, the country said that it would go ahead with its lunar plans, despite the European Space Agency announcing it would not cooperate with Moscow on future missions over its actions in Ukraine.
