Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov indicated on Monday during a press conference in Brazil with Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira that Russia is willing to settle the war in Ukraine as quickly as possible. Lavrov thanked his Brazilian counterparts for their clear understanding of the situation in Ukraine and their willingness to help find appropriate solutions.

Russian Foreign Minister’s Brazil visit

Lavrov is scheduled to meet with Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva also in the coming days, according to the Brazilian Foreign Ministry’s web itinerary.

During his visit to Brazil, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov praised Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva’s efforts to end Ukraine’s crisis. Lavrov commended Lula’s emphasis on strengthening diplomatic channels to de-escalate the issue.

Prior to Lavrov’s arrival, Lula had advocated the formation of a group of countries to arbitrate the war and had even signalled his desire to meet with officials in Beijing to discuss the topic. However, no updates on the status of these initiatives have been provided. Despite this, Lavrov thanked Lula for his initiative, emphasising the need for international collaboration in resolving conflicts and restoring peace in the impacted regions.

What Sergey Lavrov has to say about Russian actions in Ukraine?

While expressing an intent to resolve the war in Ukraine, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov reaffirmed his country’s position that any diplomatic solution must recognise Russia’s unilateral annexation of four Ukrainian provinces. “We want the Ukrainian conflict to end as soon as possible,” Lavrov said. We have previously stated the reasons for the current situation as well as the objectives we hope to attain.” He went on to say that Russia’s primary goal is to ensure that there are no military security risks to the Russian Federation within Ukraine, which he claims the West has been plotting for years.

Lavrov also emphasised the importance of protecting the lives and legal rights of the Russian-speaking people in Ukraine’s eastern and southern areas. This implies that, while Russia is eager to seek a peaceful resolution to the conflict, it is nonetheless dedicated to safeguarding its own interests as well as the welfare of ethnic Russians living in Ukraine.

Is Brazil in favour of Russia?

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva suggested during a visit to China that the US should stop “encouraging” an ongoing conflict in a particular region. Lula also urged Western governments to prioritise peace talks in their conflict-related conversations and activities.

The demands of Ukraine

Ukraine has often stated that true peace in the war can only be reached by restoring the country’s borders and allowing Kyiv to retake control of Crimea. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba declared last week at the Black Sea Security Conference in Bucharest, “Real peace means restoring Ukraine’s internationally recognised borders. True peace requires a safe home for the tormented people in Ukraine’s Crimea.”
