In the SCO (Shanghai Cooperation Organisation) summit hosted by India virtually, Russia’s Vladimir Putin told the SCO leaders said Russia would continue to counter sanctions imposed by Western countries over its invasion of Ukraine.
In the televised address to the SCO leaders, Russian President Putin said, “Russia is confidently resisting and will continue to resist external pressure, sanctions, and provocations.”
Since the Ukraine-Russian tension started, the United States and the EU (European Union) have levied an unprecedented sanctions regime against Russia over the military intervention, forcing Moscow to pivot economically to Asian markets, especially for energy exports.
Further, the Russian leader thanked the SCO members for their support during a short-lived uprising led by the mercenary group (Wagner) aimed at Russia’s military leadership.
He said, “I would like to thank my colleagues from the SCO countries who expressed support for the actions of the Russian leadership to protect the constitutional order and the life and security of citizens.”
In late June, Wagner mercenary group’s chief Yevgeny Prigozhin led his forces in a brief rebellion against Moscow’s top military brass, which the Russian President said posed a threat to the country’s very survival.
