Davos 2024: The European Commission President, Ursula von der Leyen, delivered a stark assessment of Russia's strategic failures during her address at the World Economic Forum in Davos. She pointed out that Russia's increasing dependency on China has led to significant shortcomings in its military and economic pursuits.

Russia's Military Failure

Von der Leyen underscored Russia's military failure, particularly in its near-two-year war with Ukraine. Despite Moscow's attempts, Ukraine has managed to preserve its "freedom and independence," highlighting a significant setback for Russia on the strategic front.

Economic Consequences and China Dependency

The EU chief emphasized the economic repercussions of Russia's actions, attributing its isolation from trade with Western allies to the impact of sanctions. Notably, she pointed out that Russia's current heavy reliance on China reflects a strategic failure. In contrast, Ukraine is moving "closer than ever" towards joining the European Union.

Call for Stable Support for Ukraine

Von der Leyen stressed the importance of stable support for Ukraine from its allies. She called for predictable financing throughout 2024 and beyond, along with a sustained supply of weapons to aid Ukraine in defending itself and reclaiming its rightful territory.

"Ukrainians need predictable financing throughout 2024 and beyond," stated Von der Leyen at the World Economic Forum, adding, "They need a sufficient and sustained supply of weapons to defend Ukraine and regain its rightful territory."

International Commitment

In tandem with Von der Leyen's remarks, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken also expressed the commitment to sustained support for Ukraine. Despite disputes in the US Congress over approving new funding, Blinken assured President Zelenskyy of continued assistance.

"We are determined to sustain our support for Ukraine, and we're working very closely with Congress in order to do that," said Blinken during the meeting with Zelenskyy at the World Economic Forum in Davos.

As the geopolitical landscape continues to evolve, the statements made by EU and US officials reflect a collective commitment to supporting Ukraine and addressing the challenges posed by Russia's strategic failures.
