In a recent Reuters/Ipsos survey, Vice President Kamala Harris is shown to lead former President Donald Trump by four points in a three-way race that includes independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. Harris secures 42% of the vote, compared to Trump's 38% and Kennedy's 8%. When RFK Jr. is excluded from the race, Harris maintains a slim 2-point lead over Trump, with 44% to Trump's 42%. However, Kennedy has yet to qualify for the ballot in several states as the November 5 election approaches.

Biden's withdrawal

President Joe Biden announced on Sunday that he will not seek reelection in 2024. This decision follows concerns about his health and a disappointing performance in last month's debate against Trump. In his letter to Americans, Biden expressed his commitment to his current role, stating, “It has been the greatest honour of my life to serve as your President. And while it has been my intention to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term.”

Endorsement of Harris

Biden also endorsed Kamala Harris as the Democratic nominee. He reflected on his choice of Harris as his vice president, calling it “the best decision I’ve made.” He urged Democrats to unite and support Harris, stating, “My very first decision as the party nominee in 2020 was to pick Kamala Harris as my Vice President. And it’s been the best decision I’ve made. Today I want to offer my full support and endorsement for Kamala to be the nominee of our party this year. Democrats — it’s time to come together and beat Trump. Let’s do this.”

Harris’s path forward

Following Biden’s endorsement, Harris has garnered substantial support from Democratic delegates. According to a survey released by the Associated Press on Monday evening, she has received endorsements exceeding the 1,976 delegates required for the Democratic nomination in the first round of voting.
