Iran-aligned Houthis targets sea lanes

"Iranian-backed Houthis launched a complex attack of Iranian-designed one-way attack UAVs... anti-ship cruise missiles, and an anti-ship ballistic missile from Huthi-controlled areas of Yemen into the Southern Red Sea," the US Central Command said in a statement on Wednesday

The strikes are retaliation for Israel's Gaza conflict.

Houthis hold ship hostage

Since seizing the Galaxy Leader on November 19th, the Houthis have executed 26 assaults on vital Red Sea shipping lanes. Four destroyers including a UK vessel and fighters from an American aircraft carrier were involved in thwarting this latest offensive.

The militia has vowed to continue attacks until Israel ceases Gaza hostilities.

UN Security Council seeks ceasefire

The UN Security Council is set to vote on a US resolution condemning the merchant ship attacks and demanding an immediate halt alongside the release of the Galaxy Leader and crew.

The Houthis claim solidarity with Gaza, which has reported over 20,900 fatalities since fighting erupted on October 7th.
