In opposition to the anticipated burning of a Qur’an in Sweden, hundreds of protestors stormed the Swedish embassy in central Baghdad early on Thursday morning, storming its walls and lighting it on fire.

The Swedish foreign ministry press office issued a statement denouncing the incident and emphasising the importance of diplomatic missions being safeguarded by Iraqi authorities. The statement also stated that all embassy personnel in Baghdad were safe.

According to the information, the protest was called by the supporters of Shi’ite cleric Muqtada Sadr ahead of an expected burning of the Muslim holy book, the Qur’an.

A series of videos that were shared via social media shows people gathering around the embassy at around 1 am on Thursday and storming the embassy complex.

Later on, the video shows that the smoke was coming out from the building. However, it is still not clear if anybody was present on the premises at the time of the incident.
