A scandalous UK incident has emerged where a prison guard, Katie Evans, was jailed for 21 months for misconduct after she had a sex affair with a detainee. The 26-year-old guard worked at HMP Doncaster and formed a close relationship with convicted thief Daniel Brownlee while working between March and November 2020.

Details of the misconduct

News reports stated that Evans admitted to her co-worker of having sex with Brownlee and exchanging messages with him on a smuggled phone more than 140 times. At one time, she allegedly made 39 phone calls to him within one day. In their exchanges, Evans called herself "your queen." She also exchanged confidential prison secrets with Brownlee and received £1,000 on his behalf concerning a cannabis transaction.

The Sheffield Crown Court was informed that Evans was "immature and vulnerable" at the time when she was with Brownlee, who is alleged to have exploited her. Justice Jeremy Richardson KC stated that Evans had betrayed trust in her role as a prison officer and went on to add, "Corrupt prison officers must face punishment. The public expects justice for such betrayals."

Court's decision

During Evans' sentencing, Justice Richardson recognized her effect on her young daughter and cut back the jail sentence as an act of mercy. He, however, noted the gravity of her behavior and made it clear that her behavior had undermined prison order and discipline.

Public reaction

The incident has raised outrage, with questions raised about ethical behavior in prisons. The authorities have reaffirmed the need to uphold integrity among prison officials to avoid such incidents in the future.
