United States President Joe Biden is scheduled to make a four-day visit to India from September 7 to 10 for the G-20 Leader Summit in Delhi. Jake Sullivan, National security advisor of the White House told a briefing on Tuesday.

Biden and G-20 partners will discuss a range of global issues at the Summit such as clean energy transition, climate change, the impacts of the Ukraine war, and boosting the capabilities of multilateral development banks, including the World Bank.

The White House issued a statement regarding the visit of President Biden to India and his presence at the G-20 Summit.

“President Joseph R Biden, Jr will travel to New Delhi, India, from September 7-10 to attend the G20 Leaders’ Summit,” the White House statement read.

“President Biden and G20 partners will discuss a range of joint efforts to tackle global issues, including the clean energy transition and combatting climate change, mitigating the economic and social impacts of Putin’s war in Ukraine, and increasing the capacity of multilateral development banks, including the World Bank, to better fight poverty, including by addressing global challenges,” it added.

President Biden commends India 

The press release by the White House further mentions that Biden will also commend Prime Minister Modi’s leadership at G-20.

“While in New Delhi, President Biden will also commend Prime Minister Modi’s leadership of the G20 and reaffirm the U.S. commitment to the G20 as the premier forum of economic cooperation, including by hosting it in 2026,” read the statement.

US ambassador to India Eric Garcetti also emphasised on the deep linkages between India and the United States while speaking at the Indiaspora G20 forum. He mentions that President Biden had earlier stressed on the importance of India in the world.

“He (President Biden) told me, when he asked me to come here to serve, he said, this is the most important country in the world to me, I think something that no American president has ever uttered in the history of our two countries. Indian Americans constitute six percent of taxpayers in the US,” the envoy was quoted saying as per media reports.

India and G-20

India assumed the presidency for the G-20 Summit on December 1, 2022, succeeding Indonesia.

The Summit is being held in New Delhi from September 8 to 10 and is expected to be one of the largest gatherings of world leaders.

In the meantime, Vice President Kamala Harris will be attending the U.S.-ASEAN Summit and the East Asia Summit in Jakarta, Indonesia from September 4 to 7.

In the Summit she will be focusing more on shared prosperity, security, the climate crisis, maritime security, sustainable economic growth, and the enforcement of international rules in the region, the White House release said.
