New Delhi: Singer and actor Justin Timberlake pleaded guilty to impaired driving in Sag Harbor Village Court on Friday, following his June arrest in the Hamptons. The 43-year-old pop star, known for hits both as a solo artist and former member of NSYNC, faced legal consequences for driving under the influence.
Appearing in court, Timberlake accepted a $500 fine, a $260 surcharge, and was sentenced to 25 hours of community service. Moreover, he agreed to create a public safety announcement warning about the dangers of impaired driving. The singer’s remorse was evident as he addressed the court and the media outside the courthouse.
"I try to hold myself to a very high standard, and this was not that," Timberlake told reporters after the hearing. He urged his fans and the public to avoid making similar mistakes. “Even if you’ve had one drink, don’t get behind the wheel of a car. There are so many alternatives—call a friend, take an Uber or a taxi. I made a mistake, but I hope that others can learn from it, as I certainly have.”
Timberlake acknowledged the impact of his actions on the local Sag Harbor community, expressing gratitude for the time to reflect on his behavior. He noted that he grew up in a small town and understood the strain his arrest had put on the quiet village.
According to police reports, Timberlake exhibited signs of impairment, including "bloodshot and glassy" eyes, slurred speech, and unsteadiness. He admitted to having one martini while following friends home, but he refused to take a Breathalyzer test, which automatically triggered a suspension of his driver's license under New York state law.
Legal experts suggest that this suspension could extend beyond New York through the Driver’s License Compact, an agreement between states to share information on traffic violations. Kenneth Gober, a legal expert, stated, "Most states honor suspensions across borders, but it can take time for the information to be updated in other states."
Despite the legal setback, Timberlake’s career momentum continues. He briefly addressed the incident during a concert in Chicago, telling the audience, "It’s been a tough week, but you’re here, and I’m here. Nothing can change this moment right now."
The Grammy-winning artist remains on tour, with upcoming performances in Newark, New Jersey, and Brooklyn, New York.
