World News: Prime Minister Narendra Modi landed in Kuwait on Saturday for a significant two-day visit, marking a pivotal moment in the India-Kuwait relationship. This is the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister since Indira Gandhi's landmark trip in 1981. The visit, initiated at the invitation of Kuwaiti Emir Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, is set to fortify diplomatic ties, with a focus on defense, security, and investment collaborations.
Indian officials have identified defense and security cooperation as key focal points during the discussions. Talks are also underway for a bilateral investment treaty and a comprehensive defense cooperation agreement. Arun Kumar Chatterjee, Secretary for Overseas Indian Affairs in the Ministry of External Affairs, revealed that several critical bilateral agreements are expected to be finalized during this high-profile visit.
Before embarking on the trip, PM Modi emphasized the significance of this visit in creating a forward-looking partnership. “I look forward to my meetings with His Highness the Amir, the Crown Prince, and the Prime Minister of Kuwait. It would be an opportunity to chalk out a roadmap for a futuristic partnership for the benefit of our people and the region,” PM Modi stated.
Highlighting the historical connections between the two nations, the Prime Minister added, "We deeply value the historical connection with Kuwait that has been nurtured over generations. We are not just strong trade and energy partners but also have shared interests in peace, security, stability, and prosperity in the West Asia region."
Kuwait stands as one of India's most prominent trading partners, with bilateral trade reaching $10.47 billion in the financial year 2023-24. The Gulf nation also holds the position of India's sixth-largest crude oil supplier, fulfilling 3% of its energy demands.
The sizable Indian diaspora in Kuwait, comprising 30% of the country’s workforce, plays a vital role in both nations' economies. Indian workers dominate Kuwait’s private and domestic sectors, cementing their position as an integral part of the country’s workforce.
The visit is expected to bolster India’s engagement with the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), currently chaired by Kuwait. It underscores India’s commitment to fostering regional peace and prosperity while enhancing its strategic footprint in the Gulf region.
