PM Modi lands in Italy for G7 summit 2024: Insights into agenda

G7 includes America, Britain, France, Italy, Germany, Canada and Japan. Italy currently holds the presidency of the G7 (Group of Seven countries) and is hosting the summit. G-7 member states currently represent approximately 45% of global GDP and more than 10% of the world's population.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Italy late Thursday night to attend the 50th G7 Summit, which is being held from June 13 to 15. This is after recently assuming office as the PM for the third consecutive term following the Bhartiya Janata Party-led NDA's victory in the Lok Sabha elections 2024. This will be India's 11th participation in this summit and PM Modi's fifth consecutive participation. PM Modi will participate in the outreach session. On the sidelines of the conference, PM Modi is also likely to hold bilateral meetings with the leaders of G7 countries.

To hold bilateral meeting with Italy's PM 

PM Modi will also hold a bilateral meeting with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. US President Joe Biden, French President Emmanuel Macron, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will also participate in this summit. PM Modi will leave for Italy on June 13 and will return late on June 14.

First foreign trip after taking charge as PM 

This will be Modi's first foreign trip after taking charge as Prime Minister for the third consecutive time. Modi will also be accompanied by a high-level delegation which is likely to include External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra and NSA Ajit Doval. 

Will PM meet Canada's PM? 

Tension is being seen in diplomatic relations between India and Canada. Meanwhile, the Prime Ministers of both India and Canada will participate in the G7 summit. The meeting of both could not be confirmed. Foreign Secretary Kwatra has not said anything clearly about PM Modi. Kwatra said that the way anti-India elements get political space in Canada is the biggest issue today. This is a matter of great concern for India. This issue has been raised with the Canadian government several times. He expressed hope that the Canadian government will take appropriate action to address India's concerns.

Modi will not participate in Ukraine Peace Summit 

Modi will not participate in the Ukraine Peace Summit, which will be hosted by Switzerland at Burgenstock from June 15 to 16. According to foreign secretary Vinay Kwatra, India will be represented at this meeting “at an appropriate level,” though New Delhi has yet to decide who will attend.

What is on the G7 agenda? 

In January 2024, Italy has become the President of G-7 for the seventh time. There will be two sessions in the outreach session of the 50th G-7 summit. Apart from some new important challenges like artificial intelligence, climate change and supply chain, the issue of war in Ukraine and the Middle East is likely to dominate. According to Italy, Russia's aggressive war on Ukraine has weakened its principles and given rise to increasing instability, leading to multiple crises around the world. The G7 will give equal importance to the conflict in the Middle East with its consequences on the global agenda. G7 leaders will join His Holiness Pope Francis for a session on Artificial Intelligence, among other topics.

G7 includes America, Britain, France, Italy, Germany, Canada and Japan. Italy currently holds the presidency of the G7 (Group of Seven countries) and is hosting the summit. G-7 member states currently represent approximately 45% of global GDP and more than 10% of the world's population. In line with its tradition, representatives of many countries and international organizations are invited to the summit by the host country holding the presidency. Earlier between 1997 and 2013, it had expanded as G8 with the inclusion of Russia. However, after the occupation of Crimea, Russia's membership was suspended in 2014.
