Israel: A passenger aboard a flight to Dubai captured a harrowing video on Tuesday, showcasing an intense barrage of Iranian rockets targeting Israel. The footage, which gained attention through the New York Post, depicts the alarming scale of the attack, as nearly 180 missiles were launched, escalating tensions in an already volatile region.

In the wake of the missile assault, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed that Iran would face repercussions for its actions. “Iran made a big mistake tonight – and it will pay for it,” Netanyahu stated during a political-security meeting, emphasising Israel's commitment to responding decisively. The Iranian military, in turn, warned that any retaliatory measures against Tehran would lead to “vast destruction,” intensifying fears of a broader conflict that could destabilise the Middle East.

U.S. support for Israel amidst rising tensions

As tensions escalate, the United States has reaffirmed its support for Israel, with National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan describing the missile strike as a “significant escalation.” He further warned of “severe consequences” should Iran continue its aggressive actions. Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps claimed that the missile launch was retaliation for Israeli operations against Iranian-backed militant leaders in Gaza and Lebanon.

The Israeli military shared footage of the missiles raining down near the Old City of Jerusalem, a site sacred to Muslims, Christians, and Jews alike. With alarms blaring throughout Israel and explosions audible in Jerusalem and the Jordan River valley, citizens rushed into bomb shelters as the nation braced for further attacks.

An escalating conflict

Iran's use of hypersonic Fattah missiles marked a significant development, with reports indicating that 90% of the missiles successfully hit their targets in Israel. Although Israel’s air defense systems, bolstered by U.S. support, managed to intercept many of the missiles, the scale of the assault has been described as a “severe and dangerous escalation” by Israeli Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari.

As the situation continues to develop, concerns mount that the conflict may draw Iran and the U.S. into a larger regional war, further destabilising an already precarious Middle East.
