In a historic address from the Oval Office, President Joe Biden, 81, announced his withdrawal from the 2024 presidential race, a contest in which he would have faced off against rival Donald Trump. Biden emphasised his reverence for the presidency but declared that the defense of democracy is paramount, surpassing any title.
"I revere this office, but I love my country more. It's been the honour of my life to serve as your president. But in the defense of democracy, which is at stake, I think it’s more important than any title. I draw strength, and I find joy in working for the American people. But this sacred task of perfecting our union, it’s not about me, it's about you, your families, and your futures. It's about we, the people," Biden said.
Biden stated that the best course of action is to "pass the torch to a new generation," emphasising the need to unite the Democratic Party amid deep divisions and the looming challenge posed by Trump. "I believe my record as president, my leadership in the world, my vision for America's future all merited a second term. But nothing can come in the way of saving our democracy. That includes personal ambition. So I've decided the best way forward is to pass the torch to a new generation," he added.
These remarks marked Biden's first extended public comments since announcing his decision to step aside, following weeks of pressure from fellow Democrats after a lackluster debate performance against Trump. On Sunday, Biden made it official that he would not seek re-election, making him the first incumbent president to withdraw since Lyndon Johnson in 1968.
Following Biden's announcement, Democrats have rallied around him, lauding his character and presidential record. They have also expressed strong support for Vice President Kamala Harris, who is poised to take on Donald Trump and his running mate, JD Vance after securing the Democratic nomination.
Biden faced growing dissent within the Democratic Party, with some congressional members and influential donors expressing concerns over his ability to defeat Trump, especially after his hesitant debate performance. Despite this, Biden remained resolute, stating that only 'God Almighty' could persuade him to exit the race.
Biden's age has been a consistent topic of concern since his re-election bid announcement. Many Americans have expressed disapproval of his handling of key issues such as the economy and immigration, reflected in persistently low approval ratings.
